Prompt: Rewrite a fairy tale or myth from the perspective of a minor character.
Another day and another villager found drained of all their blood. With every fresh victim fear ruled all the more in the kingdom and the reign of the Queen was threatened. She had maintained her position after the death of her husband because her sorcery protected them from the wild woods that surrounded the kingdom, but now many openly questioned her ability to continue to protect them, especially with her stepdaughter nearly of age to reign herself.
It had taken her nearly a week to make the necessary preparations to be able to find whatever this threat was and at last it was ready. With a deep breath, the Queen spoke, “Magic Mirror upon my wall, show me that which threatens my fall.”
The mirror began to fog, and then the fog began to swirl, and after a moment, with a near blinding flash, a picture of a fair young woman was seen. Jet black hair cascaded in waves over her shoulders, her skin was as white as snow, and she moved with easy grace, dancing with a villager through the streets of one of the outlying villages. The dancing figures at last turned and the Queen got a sight that took her breath away. The young woman’s mouth was red with blood, her eyes black and mesmerizing, and sharp fangs showed through a wicked smile. The villager, clearly enthralled to this creature and staggering from some of his blood clearly already drained seemed not to notice as the young woman leaned forward for a further drink
“No,” gasped the Queen. “It cannot be! Oh my dear child, what has become of you?”
The one killing the villagers, was her own stepdaughter. She recognized the signs that the young woman had been transformed into a vampire, a creature she had researched on the suspicion that such a creature is what afflicted the kingdom. How, and where, she did not know but that hardly mattered at the moment. There was no curing a vampire once they had fed and little, even with her magic, that could restrain one from feeding regularly.
How to do it was the question. Proving the girl a vampire would not be difficult, but unless one had experience or training it was far too easy for others to be enthralled by her. Arresting her and executing her publicly would be dangerous, if not impossible. She did not have time to track the girl herself. . .but maybe that was the key. The young woman loved wandering along the edge of the Wild Wood, hoping to learn more about it and tame it when her time came. She had guards, of course, but she had a habit giving them the slip. That was probably how she had been turned.
Ringing a bell that was at hand, she commanded the servant who soon appeared to fetch the Huntress, so called as she lived her whole life at the very edge of the Wild Wood, and had made herself an expert in killing the creatures within. She knew the princess well and would likely not be suspected if she approached her stepdaughter and said she would lead her into the woods. She had heard the report that the Huntress had killed vampires before and her well known hatred of those creatures would surely mean she would welcome saving the kingdom from this new menace. It was the perfect solution to save her kingdom from the vampiric princess.
If only she knew that the Huntress and the Princess were in love.
The idea of Snow White actually being a vampire is an idea I have seen in several places, but I don’t think I have ever seen it as any more than a speculation. I hope that you enjoyed! I would love to read your response to this prompt as well and also what you think of what I wrote!
I hope you all have a wonderful day, get the chance to do or experience something creative, and I’ll catch you on the next one.
