Prompt: Superheroes save the world…but they also leave a lot of destruction in their wake. Write about a normal person in a superhero’s world.
Waking up to the sound of what I later learned was a male, lizard, alien thing being thrown through my front window is easily in the top five of my least favorite ways to wake up. Once I got my wits about me, and made sure that my dogs were both okay, I snatched up a heavy lamp from my bedside table and made my way cautiously out of my bedroom to find out what was going on.
I was greeted with a seen of chaos and destruction, my entire front window was destroyed with much of the brick, wood, drywall, and glass scattered all over my living room. A strange creature that looked like a snake lay prone in the ruins of my kitchen, having finally come to a stop there. I was annoyed to see that its blood was apparently acidic and was now eating through my tile floor. Looking back through the massive hole in the front of my house and I was just in time to see what looked to be the Maiden of Iron flying away in the distance.
There also appeared to be several things just floating in the distant sky which given the context of these strange creatures, likely meant they were alien ships. There seemed to be tiny dots swarming around the ships, and another set of dots flitting around. He could just make out bolts of lightning, laser seeming to come from them, and what looked like might be fighting.
The city of New New York, so recently built for the many who had fled New York during the battle between Countess Travino and The Silver Wing Alliance, appeared to be a smoldering ruin. Nearer to him, it looked like many of the houses in his neighborhood had met a similar fate as his.
Glancing at my watch, which told me that if I did not get a move on, I would be late for work, I looked again at the city and tried to figure out whether the office building I worked at would be open or not. It seemed like a lot of the fighting had taken place around the warehouses near the docks.
As if right on cue, my cellphone rang and it was my manager advising me that the office was closed for repairs for the foreseeable future, but I needed to work from home and would be required to maintain my levels of production every single week.
The battle in the distance seemed to be winding down with two. . .oh, no, make that three of the alien’s ships destroyed and the rest fleeing into the upper atmosphere.
Showering before work was likely a moot point, since it would probably be days, if the last time was anything to go by, before we had properly running water again. I spent a few moments cleaning up as best I could, but before I knew it w the time had come for me to get to work. I changed and, saying a little prayer to the gods of technology, setup my computer and, thankfully, the internet did not seem to have gone out. I made a mental note to send my internet company a note of appreciation that they had improved their systems and redundancies to make it much harder for these battles to take them offline.
It was going to be another rough week in the office, it always was after one of these battles that inevitably left a city in ruins. One could scarcely remember what life was like before Superheroes came into our lives. It is beyond questioning that they had saved the world from some nasty things, but their presence also seemed to attract more evil and nasty things. It was hard to really understand and appreciate the collateral damage caused by these fights. The heroes meant well, and they at least made some attempt at saving people’s lives, but there were definite downsides. Or maybe that was just annoyance bleeding over onto them from the huge hole in my house and the damage to my kitchen.
I sighed, powered up my primary systems, and took a deep breath. More than 3000 calls were already in queue, which was hardly surprising given the circumstances, but still sent familiar shivers of nerves down my spine that always showed up when facing a daunting task such as this. It was going to be a long day.
I clicked my systems into ‘Ready for Call’ and sighed as the first call was connected, “Thank you for calling Insuracare’s Homeowner’s Insurance department, how can I assist you today?”
I hope that you enjoyed! I would love to read your response to this prompt as well and also what you think of what I wrote!
I hope you all have a wonderful day, get the chance to do or experience something creative, and I’ll catch you on the next one.
