Prompt: The Elusive Demon. You are a ghost or demon who is about to be exorcised. How will you avoid this horrid fate?

Restrained and bound to the bed, the body writhed in pain and fury, and the mouth snarled and snapped at the figures around the bed. The sound of prayers in several languages and at regular intervals one of the figures flung holy water upon the body, which seemed to burn the skin.

The demon possessing the body was furious and cursed its fate. It had spent centuries moving from one person to another, spreading chaos, and had always managed to avoid the attention of those who sought to protect these pathetic mortals from things like it. Even bouts of religious insanity such as the Spanish Inquisition or the Witch Trials had failed to discover it. If only he had known that the body he now inhabited was friends with a former seminary student, who recognized the symptoms of possession and called in experts.

It was going to take forever to earn the trust of hell and move up through the ranks again. That it could handle, it had climbed the hierarchy twice before, it could do it again. It was the ridicule and humiliation which would be the response of the other demons.

As it struggled against its bindings, the demon tried to figure out what to do. The bindings were tight and had been sanctified, and thus its power was useless against them. The circle of salt and symbols written in a long dead language prevented it from doing anything.

It ceased to struggle for a moment, wincing with each administration of holy water, and regarded those around it. There was a young guy who had called into the professional exorcist. He was all nerves and curiosity. The demon knew the type, it was hard for any temptation it could offer to overcome the natural anxiety and uncertainty. There was a man in his middle years, tall, wiry, and going grey. He portrayed confidence and determination but there was a look of uncertainty behind the eyes. Finally, an elderly, hunched over on a bench with what looks like might be a book in hand. Confidence radiated off of him..

Sensing the weakest link, the demon turned toward the younger of the two exorcists and in a suddenly pleasant voice began to offer the middle-aged man the world all manner of promises. It promised wealth, greater freedom, more success and many other things besides

Against the discouragement of the man’s fellow exorcists, the demon was not able to make much leeway until the subject of their twin sister came up. That gave the demon some purchase and what followed was a chaotic debate, a lot of shouting, and desperation to finish the exorcism ritual.

The demon was gone from the body on the bed and the three who had sought to exorcise the demon were all exhausted, collapsed on the ground, and covered in sweat. The young man had managed to get his cellphone out to call an ambulance for both the formerly possessed person on the bed, and also for the elderly man who looked rather worse for the wear.

The demon smiled as it peered out of the eyes of the old man, laying upon the ground. The old fool, so desperate to save his protege, had stepped into the circle of salt to finish the ritual. It had only been for a moment, but a moment was all the demon would ever need. It decided to lie in wait for a time. It could heal the pathetic human body, of course, but the others would notice. It would bide its time, it would be ready, and it was almost giddy about possessing an exorcist. The others did not notice the smile that played on the old man’s face as they waited.

I hope that you enjoyed! I would love to read your response to this prompt as well and also what you think of what I wrote! Also, please check out my books and socials! Following my page would also be greatly appreciated!
