Good evening, the trend of being too late in the day continues! I am still trying *fingers crossed* to actually stick to 10-15 minutes. . .which clearly I failed.

Please leave your feedback and your own responses to the prompt. If you like what you are reading here, I would encourage you to check out not only my other Writing Prompts, but also my books as well!

Prompt: 7. Road Trip: Write about a road trip. Is your character escaping something? Is your character looking for something? Hint at the thing without telling us while describing what the character sees.

Yet another road sign zipped by as I continued on down the highway. Kayla hadn’t really paid attention to what the sign had said, she just kept on moving. A speed limit sign, reading 75, appeared in the distance and soon whizzed past as well. Looking down at her dashboard show she was going a little more than 80. She would have liked to go faster, but she really wasn’t in a position to risk getting pulled over, so 80 would have to do.

Kayla tried to stretch her back while she was in the seat. She had been driving around for four days, with only brief stops and non-descript motels for a few hours sleep, breaking it up. Such a long-time driving was difficult on the back and hips, doubly so for something in their mid-30’s as Kayla was. She glanced at the dash again and saw, to her relief, that there was still half a tank of gas left. It would be several hours before she would need to stop.

It was a cool day outside, and there was not much to see as she drove, nothing but flat land with farms as far as the eye could see full of yellows and greens, and a light gray that permeated the sky. This made it hard to pay attention, made worse by the fact that she had given up the endless task of trying to find radio stations as she went into, and out off, various channels. As such, it seemed like no time at all when another look at the dashboard told her that she as at a quarter tank. She hated stopping, but she supposed she did not relieve herself and get something to eat, so she stayed on the lookout of the next available exit with a least a gas station.

It only took a few moments for the next exit, turning off the freeway to stop at a non-descript town with a non-descript name and get gas for her car. There wasn’t any fast food at the stop, but there were at least reasonably clean toilets and some decent looking hot dogs.

Now a good deal more comfortable, and with both herself and her gar fueled up, she climbed back behind the wheel and kept on driving. She knew that sooner or later, she would have to stop. Whether it be her body or her car, there was only so long that one person could continually drive but she needed a plan, and that was something she still struggled with. Maybe it was the limited sleep, or the long hours on the road with nothing of interest around, or the stress she was under, but absolutely nothing was coming to her.

So, she continued on the freeway, taking random turns, detours, doubling back, and getting onto different freeways going different directions. Part of her longed to see some more interesting sights than the bland, almost infinite flatness of the great plains, but it gave her the advantage of being able to see anyone coming from some distance around, and once or twice she had thought she had seen something. As it was any black cars or people in suits made her nervous when she caught sight of one.

Sooner or later, it would end. She would find a way to hide, or a way to escape, or fight back, or proof of what she had seen. But for the moment, driving was what she had, she just hoped that it could continue until she thought of a better plan. The evening soon sank into the west, it would soon by time to take a rest. But it was summer and there were several hours of daylight yet, so on she drove.

A fun exercise that I rather enjoyed writing, what are your theories about what Kayla is running from?. Let me know your thoughts and also post how you would right such a character.

Hope you enjoyed and that you are having a wonderful day and get to do, or experience, something creative.
