Prompt: Write about a heist gone wrong in the most unexpected way.
I never thought that my criminal career would end because of a shoelace. I had it all down pat. I had a small crew that I completely trusted, a method of slowly fencing and laundering what I had stolen so that it would not be transmitted back to me, I conducted my heists in different towns and cities, and I was meticulous that we never left any evidence.
All of this had made me hundreds of thousands of dollars after a series of 8 successful heists over five years, only six of which the FBI had connected to us, and to which they had little evidence and no answers. I was making careful plans to wisely invest my money so that after a few more jobs, I could retire somewhere that did not have an extradition agreement with the US, and live the rest of my life in peace.
The next job, which I had waited eleven months to do, an unusually long time for me, hoping for some of the FBI attention to calm down, was straightforward, if audacious. We were going to steal from a jewelry store in the mall. We know where the camaras were, the various sensors, security, everything, and we had a plan to take care of it all.
It went off like clockwork, at first. The camaras and sensors were disabled, we got through the security gate, and had picked the locks on the cases, to avoid those alarms, and it would still be another 8 minutes before the mall’s nighttime security would be by on patrol. More than enough time to get what we wanted. We got the pieces were wanted, and thought would earn us the most, had them well secured, and re-engaged the camaras and security.
We were just making our way out, when the security guard came by, two minutes early from his usual patrol. This was not unusual. What was unusual was that the guard almost immediately noticed that pieces were missing from the jewelry case, and sounded the alarm.
Normally, this would not have been a problem, no one had eyes on us, and we only needed a moment to get out of the building, remove our masks, hide the jewels, and act as if we were going about our business. I was just twenty feet from the exit as when the alarm went off, and trusting my crew, each going about their own paths of escape, would be fine, I started running for the door, but fate had other plans.
At some point during our heist my left boot had apparently come untied. On the third step toward the exit, my right foot landed on the shoelace, and my attempt to raise my left foot, I felt the tug, grunted, fought to keep my balance, and then hit the ground, hard. I attempted to rise as quickly as I could, but having heard my grunt and the loud thud of hitting the ground, two security guards rounded the corner were on me before I could do anything. I had never been so exasperated and frustrated in my life. All my plans undone by a shoelace!
Maybe it won’t be so bad. I have the money for a good lawyer, and they only know about this heist. Maybe I can convince them I acted alone and this was a lone heist. I’ll go to jail, by my investments will still be there waiting for me when I am done. It was going to be an irritating experience though. Seriously, a shoelace!!
A quick little heist tale with a lesson on the various, small things that can make, or break, the plans we make.
Hope you enjoyed and that you are having a wonderful day and get to do, or experience, something creative.
