Good Evening! I hope you have had a wonderful Saturday. I am working on keeping these writing exercises a little shorter (I know I have said this before) so that I can focus more on writing in my main work and progress on other projects.

If you have any suggestions for writing prompts or anything you’d like to see me do, feel free to leave a comment, I am always interested in exploring new ideas.

Please leave your feedback, I would really appreciate it! If you have your own response to this prompt, feel free to share it! If you like what you are reading here, check out my other writing exercises and my books!

Prompt: Urban Fantasy: You live in a city where mythical creatures coexist with humans. Write about your day working at a coffee shop.

If there are any advantages of working an early morning shift at a coffee shop, it’s that there is plenty of coffee to get your going. At ten minutes till 6:00 in the morning, I stagger in the door, grunt a hello to the Night-Elf and Stone Troll who worked the night shift, and go clock in. Shar’ina, the elf, presses a strong, black coffee into my hand and pats me on the shoulder on her way to count out her till. I’ve had a crush on her the entire six months I had worked there, and I think she on me, but neither of us could overcome the awkwardness of her being something like ten times my age.

The coffee restores me to something resembling life and I go about the business of cleaning and restocking things that would be needed for the morning rush. A couple of early morning customers are already coming through, mostly being taken care of by Vomonth, the troll, and then by Jagazh and Manazha, a couple of goblins who replaced it at 6:45. At 7:00, I finish the restocking and cleaning and take my post to prepare our small selection of hot items and pastries for breakfast.

The next three hours disappear in a blur. We are slammed every morning and even on a Wednesday, out slowest day, we usually have a line out the door. Garumn, a dwarf, comes in at 7:30, Stephanie, a human like me, at 8:00, and our manager, Mara’vir, a Sun Elf, is in at 8:30. Together, we managed to keep on top of everything.

The rush is calming down somewhat at 10:00 when Mara’vir sends me on a lunch break, or breakfast break sort of, which is good because I can feel myself shaking a little from having a sizeable amount of coffee with only a banana and a power-bar I ate on my way to work. I make myself a bagel sandwich with egg, grab a pastry, and eat that while finishing my 3rd coffee of the day.

The meal gets me back on my feet enough to restock the kitchen before the lunch rush sets in at 11:30. The rest of my shift is a similar blur of busyness as the morning rush always is, although our lobby did become a little bit of a scene when a couple of centaurs came in for lunch, partly because of their size in the already crowded lobby, and partly because centaurs did not often come so deep into the city. The council had been working for a decade to widen thoroughfares and provide other accommodations for the larger species, but it was a work in progress.

At last, 2:30 rolls around, and I am able to clock out. I am going to see a show with some friends tonight, particularly for a new Pixie Metal Band, the Razor Wings, that I had heard were great live, so I went home to take a nap. I didn’t work on Thursdays, but my body was at least somewhat used to waking up early in the morning, so catching a 10:00pm show without a nap was out of the question. Maybe I would even wake up early enough to do a little bit of writing, my true passion, before grabbing dinner with my friends and going to the show. The city had been a wonder to me, coming from a small, human town, when I had moved here a year ago, but now it didn’t even occur to me to think it strange to see so many other species going about their daily lives as I walked back to my apartment, although I never stopped appreciating the diversity all around me.

Please, leave your thoughts, comments, and feedback. A like and follow of my website would be great and I would be psyched if you check out my other writing and my books!

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day; you get the chance to do or experience something creative, and I’ll catch you all on the next one!
